Donald R. “Don” Brake, 91, of Fairfield, passed away at 3:25 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital Skilled Care Unit. His life reflected decades of dedication to family, education, and community service. Born October 21, 1934, in Albion, Illinois, he was the son of Clifford and Nina Brake. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1957 with a degree in education. On March 29, 1958, he married Susan Childers, beginning a lifelong partnership centered on family and shared experiences.
Brake spent much of his career teaching seventh-grade science and shop in Fairfield Public School District 112. Known for his commitment to students, he encouraged curiosity and hands-on learning. His interest in stamp collecting led him to establish a school club that continued beyond his tenure. Outside the classroom, he pursued a wide range of interests, including fishing, camping, cooking, and travel. He and his wife visited all 50 states and several countries. He was also involved in genealogy, stained glass work, Boy Scouts, Kiwanis, and volunteer service at the local hospital.
At Cornerstone Community Church, he was active in outreach efforts, contributing to community meals and youth support programs. His service was often expressed through practical acts of care. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held April 6, 2026, at Cornerstone Community Church, with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.
